What springs to mind when you think of PR? Newspaper articles? Patsy and Edina?
Getting featured in traditional media like newspapers is fantastic. But there are so many other opportunities to boost your profile.
And becoming a podcast guest is one of the best ways to promote yourself. It's also one of the quickest.
Quick confession: I'm a podcast addict. Listening to a podcast on my headphones while on my daily walk or run, or while cooking a family meal at home, just appeals to my love of multi-tasking and saving time.
But how do you get yourself into the podcast guest hot seat?
My top advice? Just ask.
• Choose one of your favourite podcasts and contact the host
• Briefly say why you're a fan
• Explain why you'd make a great guest
The trick here is to personalise your pitch without being salesy. You need to explain how you can add value. Can you share topical ideas or advice? Do you have an irresistable USP?
Top tip
If you've been a guest on a podcast before, or been interviewed for radio or TV, increase your chances of success by sharing a link in your pitch email.
Don't have this experience? No problem. Share a link to a video from your website instead.
Podcasts are such a brilliant way to boost your visibility and credibility. And all it takes is a quick email.
I love listening to…
Speaking of podcasts, I'm a massive fan of the long-running and totally inspirational Being Freelance podcast with host Steve Folland.
Freelancers and small business owners chat about how they got started and what lessons they've learnt. They share advice on how to make it, and any mistakes they've made along the way
I'm currently working my way back through all the episodes...still got more than 200 to go!
While you're there, check out the Being Freelance community. It's one of the friendliest and most supportive online communities.
It also helps me to get my head down when I need to focus. In fact, I'm writing this newsletter during a Being Freelance virtual co-working session.
15-minute homework task ✍
Contact one podcast host and suggest yourself as a guest.
Start small. Local podcasts in your town or city are great, or podcasts specific to your industry/niche.
Has one of your clients - or someone you've met networking - started their own podcast? Track down those contact details and send that email.
Good luck!
